The lover's background and family history is very intertwined with Japanese culture. Him being Taiwanese, his grandparents only speak Japanese and the Taiwanese dialect. So when I heard about this book, Tokyo Vice by Jake Adelstein on NPR a while back, I decided to get it for him as a gift. He devoured it within two days. It's a wonderful book with very interesting tidbits about the underbelly of the Japanese crime syndicate and its effect on Japanese society.
One of the greatest things about living in New York is that just about all book signing tours go through here, not to mention it's an epicenter for cultural happenings. Tonight at the Japan Society, Jake Adelstein spoke about his book, and privy'd us to what he knew based on his investigation and experiences with the Yakuza in Japan. It was an extremely fascinating lecture, and for a moment, I was able to escape from the chaos of moving during the past week.
Hilarious guy that Jake. (Fyi, Evan is the lover I'm always referring to.)
